Speaker:

  • Dr. Patrick Okwen. Dr. Okwen is a medical doctor and researcher based in Cameroon. He is district medical officer at Bali district health service and team lead at Effective Basic Services (eBASE) Africa. He is active within global evidence communities including Cochrane, Africa Evidence Network, Joanna Briggs Institute, and Guidelines International Network. At eBASE Patrick leads a team that seeks to improve livelihoods through innovation and best practices. Among interventions eBASE Africa is rolling out evidence portals for health and education to assist practitioners with use of research evidence. eBASE is also using storytelling to get research evidence to citizens especially non-literate and indigenous populations. With Sexual and Gender Based Violence stagnating sustainable development goals, gender equality, human rights, and global health, eBASE has been working with governments and donors to design innovative approaches to end SGBV and mitigate its impact on vulnerable groups. The team at eBASE recently won a Grand Challenges Canada Stars in Global Health award to use storytelling to address the wicked problem of SGBV at community level in Cameroon.
